Ruth DeBusk, PhD, RD

With over 40 years combined experience in academics, research, corporate consulting and clinical practice, Dr. DeBusk is considered a pioneer in the emerging field of nutritional genomics. Regarded as a national authority in nutrition, genetics and dietetics, Dr. DeBusk has lectured throughout the country on nutritional genomics, authored leading textbooks and chapters and has been the recipient of some of the most prestigious awards and honors in the field.

Trained as a nutrition professional, geneticist and molecular biologist, Dr. DeBusk was an Assistant Professor of Genetics at Florida State University for many years. Her research focused on genetic regulation of nutrient absorption in response to environmental signals. With an entrepreneurial spirit, hardly common for professor in the mid-eighties, she and a group of graduate students founded a biotechnology company to develop genetic diagnostic assays for the food industry. She went on to form a second company that used DNA profiling for identifying individuals. These experiences provided the foundation for establishing her clinical practice in the early stages of the integration of genetics into health care. As a clinician, her role has ranged from genetic counseling to gastroenterology-related nutrition therapy to gene=based nutritional interventions as that technology has evolved.

Dr. DeBusk is also a prolific and accomplished writer. Over the years, as a university professor, she has authored dozens of research publications in nutrition and genetics. In addition, she has authored leading references for clinicians including: Herbs as Medicine: What You Should Know, Integrative Medicine: Your Quick Reference Guide and the American Dietetic Association's Genetics: The Nutrition Connection. In 2006 with Yael Joeffe, RD, she coauthored the popular first of-its-kind lay person primer, Its Not Just Your Genes.

Her outstanding accomplishments have not gone unrecognized. A past recipient of numerous distinguished awards, in 2007 she was honored with the Harold Harper Award for Science and Practice of the American College for Advancement in Medicine.

After receiving her BS at Trinity University, San Antonio, she pursued a dual doctorate in nutrition/food science and Genetics/Molecular biology.

Presently she is adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where she teaches a graduate level course in nutritional genomics.
